In London the delivery of the DIVERSE CITIES Educational Programme was supported by Dr Jamie Kesten and Dr Tatiana Moreira De Souza of University College London. The programme was conducted with a class of 27 Geography students in Year 8 (12-13 year old) at St Thomas More Catholic School, located in Wood Green in the London Borough of Haringey with the aim of discussing diversity in Haringey.
After making initial contact with the school in March 2016 via email and later holding preparatory meetings in April and May to finalise the content and schedule of the programme it was delivered across five 1 hour class room sessions and one 2 hour session conducting fieldwork in the local neighbourhood between the 20th June and the 12th July 2016.
Students undertook three classroom assignments and two homework assignments as part of the programme and gave very positive feedback of their experiences learning about diversity, their neighbourhood and their classmates. They particularly enjoyed the process of conducting fieldwork in their local neighbourhood and learning about some of the principles of social research.
Simon Bent, Assistant Headteacher at St Thomas More Catholic School, described the Diverse Cities education programme as an enjoyable and productive experience for both him and his students. You can read his insightful evaluation here and see some photographs below.
